I just finished reading The Piano Book cover to cover (well, ok, not all the detail on all the pianos!), and as a person who made my living as a freelance writer of technical and marketing materials for 25+ years, I think this is a fabulous book. It is beautifully written, with a warm and engaging style (no passive-voice academise); the explanations are completely clear (oh-so-rare in technical literature); and the drawings are superb. And what a breadth of material covered! This book is an incredible service to people who love pianos...

I only recently started piano lessons, then learned from my piano technician that my 1927 Fischer upright is a jalopy (who knew?), then wondered about a 'new' piano on the internet, found pianoworld.com, saw a mention of Knize's "Grand Obsession", ordered and read it, and topped that off with the Piano Book. Next, my retirement account gets to take a hit...

Very true....even though a price tag often exists on an instrument, there may come a day of agreement between the buyer and seller of a different price for the electronic piano or grand piano. Thank you for enlightening me on such a valuable buy. I will be visiting more often for more information :)

Ultimately I think the sound of a piano is the most important. two pianos of the same make and model can have a slightly different sound when played. Which one is best depends on the personal tastes of the buyer. It goes without saying however that a pleasant sound generated from an especially cheap piano doesn't make it good.
